When new arrangements for further and higher educational support for Service Leavers (SLs) were announced in July 2008, media coverage was misleading - appearing to suggest that all SLs with the required six years' service would be entitled to fully subsidised tuition fees for a first higher education qualification. Closer examination reveals that eligibility requires personnel to have already registered in the preexisting Enhanced Learning Credit (ELC) scheme. Furthermore, the new entitlement only applies to SLs who terminated their service on or after 17th July 2008.
