The Foscarnet Ganciclovir CMV Retinitis Trial (FGCRT) was a multicenter, unmaskedclinical trial conducted by the Studies of the Ocular Complication of AIDS (SOCA) group in collaboration with the ACTG-129. The study was designed to compare the efficacy and safety of foscarnet and ganciclovir for the initial treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in people with AIDS. The outcome measures included survival, retinitis progression, and loss of visual function (acuity and field). Two-hundred thirty-four (234) patients were randomized at 11 clinical centers, 107 to treatment with foscarnet (Fos) and 127 to treatment with ganciclovir (Gev). The data sets analyzed for this report are available at cost from the SOCA Coorinating Center.
