International Maritime Organization and the environment

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been working towards a sustainable reduction of carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions from ships since 2000. The policy was established following the 1997 MARPOL conference. This resulted in the 'Study of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) from Ships' presented to the 45th session of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 45). The study subsequently underwent an update in 2007 and 2008, and was recently published as the 'Second IMO GHG Study 2009'.
