A user terminal in the form of a handset (1) operable to communicate directly with a satellite or with other services, such as a terrestrial radio telephone network, at different frequencies has a single antenna (3) for use with all services. To optimise the efficiency of the satellite link the antenna is arranged to be resonant and matched at the satellite frequency, while being unmatched at the terrestrial frequency where signals are stronger and antenna efficiency less critical. The handset comprises means for approximately or precisely adjusting the match to the common antenna for the other services.
