Today's social and technological scenario is characterised by a progressive functional and organisational integration of application and technological infrastructures. This trend - the basis for the realisation of enhanced, complex and distributed services - is constantly encouraged by the markets, technologies and services' globalisation.Although this continuously evolving scenario results in undeniable economic and organisational benefits, it increases the level of vulnerability of critical infrastructures. These become sensitive to unpredictable failures whose impact is spread - through a 'cascade' effect -to all integrated systems, causing instability and inefficiencies.
