Iraq saw more violence and mayhem in 2006 and there is no slowing down of the downward drift. International, regional and local Iraqi efforts to curb violence did not bear any fruit. Conflict of U.S., Iraqi and regional countries' interests prevented any coherent strategy to halt Iraq's downward trend. Various actors are attempting to address some issues, however most of these efforts are too little and too late. A comprehensive review of internal and regional factors to tackle the conflict is still missing.
