Germany reports record milk processing

With a record 29 million tonnes of milk processed by German dairies in 2010 (+1.35% on the year), the German Milk Industry Association (MIV) sees no end to the white flood. Despite complaints that the product is still being sold too cheaply in the nation's discount markets, farmers don't seem to be discouraged: their milk production was up another 2.2% during the first quarter of 2011. The main reason, according to MIV spokesperson Bjorn Bdrgermann, is once again cheese with 46% of all milk going into this production in 2010. Domestic sales of cheese were up 2.2% to a per capita con- sumption of 22.8 kg over the last year. Exports have also continued to boost German cheese performance with increases in shipments to Russia, the US and the Far East.
