Law blocks world cheese imports

Organisers of the UK World Cheese Awards* appealed to the UK Food Standards Agency to overturn an EU ruling that prevented Japan, South Africa and countries from South America including Brazil, importing samples of cheese for judging. A change to European Union laws over concerns about animal health rules and safe handling of milk means that a number of countries were denied permission to enter the cheese competition. However, in a display of support, each of these countries sent representatives to judge at the awards in November, which attracted almost 3,000 cheeses from all over the world.
