It could be argued that the genome's raison d'etre is to provide the cell with instructions for how and when to build its proteins. Proteins are the workhorses of biology. They regulate and perform nearly every biochemical process in the cell from assembling its structural elements to determining its fate. Proteins play the central role in disease and drug discovery. They lie at the heart of disease etiology and all currently available pharmaceuticals either act by affecting protein function or are themselves proteins.
