Colonial lives across the British Empire: imperial careering in the long nineteenth century

There are many ways in which Britain's imperial history is currently being rewritten. This book brings together two significant developments in that endeavour: an interdisciplinary reconsideration of empire through ideas of networks, webs and the circulation of people, things and ideas; and the reworking of imperial biography through the critical lens of the decentred subject of post-colonial and feminist theory. Taking its cue from Catherine Hall's evaluation of the career of Edward John Eyre in Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean as both reflecting and constituting the changing politics of race in the British Empire, this volume brings together eleven studies of individuals who 'careered' around the empire, making it and themselves different in the process.
