Parental criminality and low self-control: an examination of delinquency

Researchers have shown that parenting practices are important in self-control theory. The purpose of the present study was to examine the link between parental low self-control, low self-control, and delinquency. Using a national probability sample and structural equation modeling, the present study showed that parental low self-control has a link with child low self-control and that low self-control does have a link with delinquency. Another structural equation model showed that self-control mediated the link between parental low self-control and delinquency. The theoretical implications are discussed.
