We get many inquiries and letters asking about various amateur radio procedures, policies and subjects. Every once in a while we tackle some that are of general interest. Let's handle some of them this month. Q: What happened to all those FCC Field Offices that were located in most large cities? A: Up until the mid 1990s, there were dozens of FCC field offices and nine HF monitoring stations manned by FCC agents scattered around the country. Among many other duties, FCC agents monitored the airwaves for violations, conducted on-scene investigations, inspections and audits- and handled local administrative functions. In the 1980s, amateur radio testing that had been handled by FCC agents at these offices and nearby locations was turned over to the amateur community.
