Steam use has come a long way; now steam plays an important part in many industrial processes and control of the generation and use of steam can be a major cost factor. The benefits of today's steam plant are manifold; amongst these a long life (up to 80 years operation is not uncommon), with reliability assured by automatic monitors and condition monitoring across the whole system. Such systems are extremely low maintenance as today's monitoring and control systems are all automatic. Energy efficiency is achieved by accurate temperature control, flexible operation and effective heat recovery.
