FDT AND EDDL: THE ELECTRONIC INTEGRATION OF FIELD DEVICES

Instruments in today's manufacturing plants have three things in common: 1. There are a lot more of them; 2. They are much more complicated than they used to be; and 3. There are too few instrument technicians to take care of them. Indeed large chemical manufacturing plants may have tens of thousands of instruments to look after. It is no longer cost effective to service all these instruments with field engineers carrying around test and measurement equipment from one location to the next.
