Opposition brings uncertainty to airport spending

Transport fiascos used to happen on the railways. One route -from London to Southend in Essex - broke down so often it was known as the Misery Line. But, little by little, the railways have regained some of their reputation. A number of events have made rail, well, sexy again. Those tilting trains on the West Coast Main Line for instance, or Network Rail at last embarking upon a huge spending programme that seems real this time and, of course, the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. St Pancras station has become a destination and the speed at which Eurostar trains whisk passengers to the Continent cannot fail to impress.
