Not so long ago, people working from towers and podium platforms would push-shuffle their way along corridors. The gates of the podiums would be left open and all four wheels would be unlocked for ease of movement. Towers would be erected with few or no toe plates and guard rails missing, and a wooden ladder would be propped against the hand rail for access. Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) would be driven on rough terrain at speed, causing their occupants to be flung from the platform (to the amusement of work colleagues), and keys would be removed from the ground-level control module leaving a bemused operator left shouting down from on high.
