New conservatoires (music teaching schools to you and I) are not an everyday event. Even those in the know will struggle to think of the last one that was delivered. The one coming together in the West Midlands may be the last. At least, that's the view of one preeminent performer, who knows a thing or two about such matters. "I don't think there will ever be another purpose-built conservatoire in the UK again -this is the first one this century," says Julian Lloyd Webber, cellist, conductor and the principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire.
