Boris Johnson used his speech on Tuesday morning to liken his commitment to construction spending with the New Deal - the massive US economic turnaround programme that followed the Great Depression - while a statement from Downing Street trumpeted £5bn of imminent infrastructure spending. It is, on the face of it, quite a modest commitment, and one that hardly recalls the land of nation-changing economic stimulus seen in the New Deal. Others have pointed out that the spending plans delivered this week repeat pledges outlined earlier in places such as the Conservative Manifesto and the Budget.
