Off-peak paving

A wirtgen SP150 slipform paver has installed new concrete barriers during off-peak rnperiods on a busy Southampton, UK road to ease traffic congestion. rnContractor SIAC Construction used the paver on Redbridge Causeway - a dual two-lane river crossing viaduct linking the M271 motorway with the district of Totton. rnThe 630 m long concrete barrier was constructed overnight to keep disruption to a minimum. The project was fast-tracked to take advantage of limited night-time closures of the route. rnA total of 250 m~3 of concrete was used in the project and SIAC also installed expansion joints on the barriers, requiring vertical cuts and fixing steel covers to the finished concrete monolith. rnThe paver can be used in a variety of site conditions according to Wirtgen. Moulds in the most diverse profiles can be attached either to the right or to the left side of the SP150. The two front tracks can be mounted on the mainframe either rigidly or by using a swing-leg configuration. rnFurther options include a trimmer unit and concrete feed via a conveyor belt or auger, and electric or hydraulic compaction.
