The devil is in the detail when it comes to the aftertreatment technology used by off-highway diesel engine manufacturers working to comply with the strict laws that come into force in the EU and US in 2014. Next year's European Stage Ⅳ and the broadly equivalent US Tier 4 Final laws will see another reduction in nitrous oxide (NOx) on top of the cut in particulate matter (PM) which was achieved under the current Stage ⅢB/Interim Tier 4 laws. Essentially, the 2014 laws take PM and Nox emissions to near-zero levels. Engines rated between 130kW and 560kW will be affected in 2014, and the 75kW and 130kW power band will have to comply from 2015.
