The placid waters of Wilson Dam Lake and the Tennessee River are about a hundred feet below the balcony rail of Harvey and Joyce Ann Rob-bins' rustic and rambling estate house near Muscle Shoals, Alabama. "About" is nearly as precise as any measurement used in the design of his 9,000-square-foot home. Harvey Robbins, 71, who expanded National Floor Covering (founded by his father, Stanley, in 1931) into an industry-leading company before retiring in 1995, is an engineer by training, but prefers to be guided more by instinct than mathematics. Thus, the five-year-old house had no blueprints; instead, it grew from a combination of vision, ambition and a let's-see-what-happens-next approach to habitat design.
