Russian and US farmers may be on opposite sides of the ideological divide but they also have plenty in common -and not just ever-present concerns about weather, prices or yields. Both have found their export ambitions constrained by what would appear to be a rather mundane problem: a shortage of containers. Ask any producer based in the US midwest, and they are likely to have tales of woe about how they could not always get their crops to market because containers were piled up on the coast, with ocean carriers unwilling to reposition them to the heartlands because of greater need elsewhere. Now Russian shippers are finding themselves in much the same position, keen to tap overseas markets but often unable to obtain the necessary container equipment.
