THE highly competitive transhipment market stands only to intensify as carriers look to further drive down costs by operating out of fewer, but larger, hubs in the near future, new analysis shows. The study, published by Copenhagen-based consultancy LinerGrid, claims that such a move could potentially save carriers up to 7% on transhipment costs. Yet for ports that rely heavily, or indeed solely, on this hub-and-spoke formula, the transition could have a much more profound impact. Some will win big, whereas others stand to lose out altogether.
