Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method is adopted to overcome the large mesh distortions near the footing corners under ultimate loading conditions. The reliability of the obtained bearing capacity factors N-c and N-q are assessed by comparing with the existing results. A modified expression of N-gamma is presented for a strip footing under uniform displacement considering both soil-footing roughness and internal friction angle of the soil. The failure patterns are investigated in terms of the displacement and velocity field beneath the footing. Moreover, the failure patterns are classified under different soil parameters and footing embedment. This study provides a new approach to the ultimate bearing capacity determination and failure pattern classification of strip footing resting on c-phi soils.
