摘要

Since the concept of 'effective stress' has given a successful description to mechanics of saturated soils, it was natural to attempt to derive an 'effective stress' expression for unsaturated soils. Laloui and Nuth [1] clarified the effective stress lexicon commonly used for unsaturated soils, and gave a more accurate definition of the conventional Bishop's effective stress, which is very helpful for understanding the real meaning of effective stress of unsaturated soils.
