Several years ago, it was hip for chip manufacturers to have a network processor in their product portfolio. With so much hype around these products, manufacturers unleashed a flurry of solutions that would supposedly tackle functions like parsing, traffic management, packet forwarding, and classification in networking equipment designs. These products were hyped as the end-all solution that could accelerate time-to-market by eliminating pesky and time-consuming ASIC development processes.
