Communication research has long attended to the relationship of young people and media, often examining the impact of media on young people. This edited volume looks in the other direction: how young people themselves engage in media, creating media messages and expressing themselves audiovisually. "Broadly speaking, youth media includes projects and programs that engage young people as creators of media products, often within nonprofit contexts such as schools, government agencies, or a variety of community-based organizations and, sometimes, the commercial sector" (p. 2). The contributors to this volume cover a range of territory about youth media; these efforts fall into categories such as social justice, political action, the arts, cross generational communication, workforce development, academic support, youth development, recreation, and community development (p. 7). Some of these areas encourage young people to be active in their communities; in all of them young people benefit from skills that they have learned by becoming media producers.
