Focusing on outbreaks of religious violence in Kano from 1991, it is clear that âhow, when and whyâ such violence occurs is complex, with ethnic and religious identities inter-connecting with other dimensions within society, polity and economy. In attempting to explain and understand the multidimensional reasons for such violent outbursts, four possible factors that may trigger violence can be identified: socio-economic problems; weaknesses of state mechanisms in dealing with potential clashes; religious rivalry and radicalisation; and external factors. Ultimately, conflict will end when all groups realise they have little to gain from the exercise. But before that can happen a fundamental reassessment of the relationships between politics and society in Nigeria is required.View full textDownload full textKeywordsconflict, Islam, Christian, youth, social and economic needsRelated var addthis_config = { ui_cobrand: "Taylor & Francis Online", services_compact: "citeulike, netvibes, twitter, technorati, delicious, linkedin, facebook, stumbleupon, digg, google, more", pubid: "ra-4dff56cd6bb1830b" }; Add to shortlist Link Permalink http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14662043.2011.541115
