Drivers' hours offences cost haulier dearly

A herefordshire agricultural business has been suspended from operating trucks for two weeks after it allowed a driver to work double shifts, significantly breaking drivers' hours rules. Leominster-based Connop & Son has had its O-licence suspended from 1-15 March after it failed to realise that driver Stephen Duggan was using another driver's card to regularly work between 70 and 80 hours a week. A public inquiry (PI) in Birmingham on 25 January was told that Duggan committed 82 drivers' hours offences in total between September 2014 and January 2015, including driving for more than 10 hours in a day, creating false records and taking insufficient daily rest. He was convicted in September 2015 of 28 offences of making a false record and fined £500. The operator was fined £1,000 with £1,400 in costs.
