摘要

Methods of dye identification on historical textiles have been through considerable improvements since the first wet chemical methods were introduced in 1935. A number of suitable instrumental analytical methods exist for this purpose, the most modern being HPLC and 3D fluorescence. Similarly important is the wide distribution of technological information about dyeing in the different ages and geographical areas. The evaluation of the results of dye investigations has become very thorough and has been presented in a way that both curators and conservators can take advantage of the information gained. The activity of the Working Group of Dyes in History and Archaeology founded by Penelope Walton and George Taylor in York in 1982 has greatly contributed to the development of this field.
