Outstanding Books for the College Bound not only serves as a very useful collection of the 1999, 2004, and 2009 lists but also presents a history of the lists and possibilities for using and promoting the titles covered. The opening chapter, "Forty Years of Outstanding Books," offers a history of the lists, which began when the National Education Association requested that the Book Selection Committee of the American Library Association's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) compile one. That list was published in the National Education Association journal in 1959. The chapter follows through to the present day, tracing changes the lists have undergone, such as where, how, and when the lists are published. Understanding the philosophy and selection process behind the lists can help in understanding why titles are or are not included.
