摘要

General Motors downsized its full-sized cars for 1977 and found great success. Yet, sales of large Lincolns also rose because not all Americans were ready to give up big cars. When the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) turned off the tap on oil supplies to the West in October 1973, it had Americans over a barrel-in just about every sense of the term-and they didn't like it. The first "energy crisis" of the decade resulted in long lines to buy limited quantities of gasoline at higher prices. Many Americans came to realize that the days of the big, bold, heavy cars to which they had become accustomed to driving were numbered.
