You can think of this Isuzu as the sport-utility vehicle equivalent of the Studebaker Avanti: a highstyle, limited-edition attention-getter conceived on a tight budget. The VehiCross is the kind of Hail Mary pass that automakers sometimes try to juice up their image and sales, but it didn't help Isuzu much more than the Avanti did Studebaker. Even so, this is definitely cheap wheels, partly because it's "just" a truck and partly because it's an Isuzu, a brand that never made it big in the global consumer market despite 50 years of trying. Sources we checked suggest that you can nab the nicest VehiCross in existence for $6600-$8900. And, more than with most decade-old rides, you really must get the best one you can find. Which could be a challenge, because U.S. VehiCross sales totaled only 4166 units. Of those, 3472 were retailed in 1999-2001, the remaining 793 in 2002-03, according to trade weekly Automotive News. Factor in 10 years of attrition and there might be 2500 decent specimens left.
