Many Admirable Qualities: Rambler's 1958-62 Six/Classic

After coining perilously close to bankruptcy during 1956, American Motors Corporation found itself on the upswing in mid 1957. Although the company would report a small loss that fiscal year, Rambler sales by year end were trending strongly upward, and the company was becoming more profitable with each passing month. By the time the 1958 models were introduced on October 22, 1957, there was little doubt that AMC was on the mend. Dealers were clamoring for more cars, and, despite that the rest of the industry was in a downturn, the Rambler was taking off in the market. The reason for this increased demand was the cars themselves. The company made some major revisions to what AMC Chairman George Romney termed its "basic volume" car: the 108-inch-wheel-base Rambler Six. The slower-selling companion Rambler V-8 was spun off into a series called the Rebel, and the place of the discontinued Nash and Hudson brands was taken by a stretched and redecorated Rambler dubbed the "Ambassador by Rambler."
