Lapping It Up: Plymouth's Indy 500 Pace Car Experience

Car and Driver magazine probably said it best: "Around Detroit it's always been considered a very big promotional deal to have the pace car at Indianapolis." For the 49th running of the Memorial Day Classic on Monday May 31, 1965, the race would be paced by a new Plymouth Sport Fury convertible. The car chosen for the job was painted white, fitted with a blue top and interior, and powered by the potent 426-cid "wedge-head" V-8. A fleet of similar vehicles, albeit running 383 V-8s, was enlisted to serve as official cars for the activities of the 500 Festivals Associates, a nonprofit organization of civic leaders that sponsored most prerace festivities.
