In contrast to civilian institutions, the army blood dona- tion service in Germany is characterized by predomi- nantly young, male, and healthy probands(for the most part soldiers; ≤24 years of age; ≌65/100)and by rapid replacement of the medical staff in the collecting teams. Therefore, only 6.5/100 of the volunteers were rejected From donation, about one fifth of these concerning a low Hemoglobin level probably based upon suboptimal tech- Nical handling during the determination procedure. On The other hand, 6/100 of the whole blood units had to be Removed for production-related reasons, about 50/100 of Them because of insufficient volume in laboratory spe- Cimens.
