Economic evaluation of dabigatran etexilate for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients aged over 75 years or with moderate renal impairment undergoing total knee or hip replacement

Major joint replacement surgery is a well-known risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Several guidelines recommend appropriate thromboprophylaxis (TP) using antithrombotic drugs such as low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWH) and others. Due to reduced hospital stays, even after major hip or knee replacement surgery, there is a need for effective and convenient TP after hospital discharge. The subcutaneous route of administration may act as a barrier for extended TP using LMWH.
