SMOG - MORE THAN A LONDON PROBLEM

It is not only London that has a long history of experiencing unhealthy sulphur-laden, sooty fogs (smogs). Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Stoke-on-Trent and Tyneside have suffered too. Indeed, most urban areas, especially those whose industrial base and population developed rapidly through the 19th century, experienced smogs during the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Where towns and cities were located in valleys or basins the problem was made even worse as pollutants became trapped and the cold night-time air drained down valley sides encouraging fog formation.
