How many mobile phones have you owned - and where are they all now? Have they been reused or recycled, or are they in a landfill site somewhere in the world? In the UK, practically everyone now owns a mobile phone. According to 2018 Ofcom research, 96 per cent of households have at least one, while 78 per cent of adults pack a smartphone. Although sales of new models are slowing, the UK's phone upgrade culture has encouraged a market where consumers currently replace their (often serviceable) phones on average every 27.7 months.
