摘要

After regulations for the collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries were laid before Parliament last month, they have now come into force. The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) stated that the regulations were set to come into force on 5 May, but the first compliance period for battery collection and recycling will not come into force until 1 January 2010.rnThe regulations outline how the battery manufacturers are expected to meet their producer responsibility obligations under the Batteries Directive, the targets for which are for the UK to collect 25 percent of its waste portable batteries by 2012 and 45 percent by 2016. From 5 May potential compliance scheme operators can start recruiting members and establishing collection and recycling systems.
