Third Yangtze Bridge Opens in Nanjing

The world's third-longest cable-stayed bridge opened to traffic on October 7 in Nanjing, China. Officially known as the Nanjing Third Yangtze River Bridge—it being the third crossing of the Yangtze River at Nanjing, capital of the province of Jiangsu—the 1,288 m structure features a 648 m main span and side spans of 257 and 63 m. The cable-stayed portion is merely part of the 4.7 km river crossing, and the crossing is just part of a 15.6 km project that includes a 3.1 km approach from the north and a 7.8 km southern approach, explains Dennis J. Jang, p.e., the vice president and project director for T.Y. Lin International, of San Francisco, which provided the design review and other design and construction support for the new bridge. Designed to accommodate river traffic, the main span is connected at each end to approach viaducts that consist of a series of 50 m concrete spans.
