Report Sees Positive Future For Engineers, Scientists

Engineers and scientists in the United States "appear to be less severely affected" by the recession that began in 2007 than are workers in other occupations, according to a new report from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Science and Engineering Indicators 2010. For example, in April 2009 the unemployment rate was 9.0 percent for all U.S. workers but only 4.3 percent for those in the category designated within the report as "science and engineering" (S&E). Moreover, projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that total employment in S&E occupations will increase at more than double the rate for all occupations in the period from 2006 to 2016-21.4 percent for S&E occupations, versus 10.4 percent for all occupations, the report says.
