Ne year after its October 2010 opening, the Mike O'Callaghan-' Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass, continues to draw praise from motorists, tourists, and engineers. Rising 890 ft above the Colorado River, the 1,900 ft long bridge offers extraordinary views of one of the nation's greatest icons, improves traffic flow on U.S. 93 between Arizona and Nevada, and protects the historically and economically important dam by rerouting traffic around it. An engineering triumph more than 40 years in the making, the crossing relieves congestion on the roadway that crosses the dam, which in carrying both highway and tourist traffic had created hazard and hardship for both. The design of the bypass, which includes eight other bridges and roadway approaches on either side of the river, improves safety for drivers and reduces traffic congestion and fuel consumption for the thousands of daily drivers who depend on this route.
