A building on the grounds of the renowned palace of Versailles, which beginning in the reign of Louis XTV served as the home of the French monarchy, is slated to become a luxury hotel. The hotel will be developed in a mansion known as the Hotel du Grand Controle. The mansion was built in the 1680s and served as the offices and home of the king's treasurer. It is located approximately 100 yd from the main palace and has been in a deteriorating state for many years. The body that administers the palace of Versailles does not have the $7 million needed to restore the Hotel du Grand Controle. Therefore, it has agreed to allow the Belgian hotel company Ivy International to renovate the mansion and turn its 23 bedrooms into a five-star hotel. A percentage of the profits generated by the hotel will be paid to the palace administration as rent. The mansion will be restored this year, and the hotel is expected to open next January. The restoration is the first in a series of commercial projects aimed at preserving French monuments.
