摘要

While we should have faith in our elected officials, sometimes it seems like they have tossed all common sense out the window. Such is the case with a recently proposed bill in Maine, SD 1790, "An Act To Reduce Contamination of Breast Milk and the Environment from the Release of Brominated Chemicals in Consumer Products." The title of the bill indicates we will be dealing as much, if not more, with environmental scare tactics and an appeal to our fears than of cold, hard scientific facts. The bill was introduced by Representative Hannah Pingree on December 17 and was read and accepted by the House and Senate Natural Resources Committees in January. By the second week of February, when this column was written, the bill had collected 10 co-sponsors and had been scheduled for a public hearing on Tuesday, February 17.
