In this paper, a new ternary porogen was reported to prepare MIP coatings in a capillary for polar template, zopiclone. The porogen system was composed of a mixture of toluene, isooctane and dimethyl sulfoxide. The composition of the specifically designed ternary porogen allowed fine control of the porous properties of MIP coatings over a broad range. The racemic zopiclone was selectively recognized by capillary electrochromatography on the resultant d-zopiclone-imprinted coatings. The influence of several parameters on the ability of the resultant imprinted capillary column to resolve rac-zopiclone was investigated. These parameters included the type and amount of functional and cross-linking monomers, the molar ratio of the imprint molecule to the monomers and the composition of the porogen. The varied trends of efficiency of imprinted coatings with varied polymerization parameters were also discussed. Baseline resolution was obtained under optimized conditions and the highest column efficiency of the later eluent d-zopiclone was 21,400 plates m−1.
