In the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been increasingly popular in treatment of diseases as well as health maintenance. Current situation: TCM has played an important role in the health care system in Hong Kong. Based on a study conducted in 1996, there are about 7000 TCM practitioners in Hong Kong. According to the Census and Statistics Department, there were about 5860 TCM establishments and over 27000 employees in TCM trade in 1994. It is estimated that about 2000 species of Chinese medicinal herbs and 3300 kinds of patent Chinese medicines are available in Hong Kong. A study by the Chinese Medicinal Material Research Center of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1991 showed that some 60% of the population in Hong Kong have consulted TCM practitioners at one time or another.
