As international chemistry moves into the post-Cold War era, in-dustry and academia are dissolving traditional disciplinary barriers, digging deep into new areas of basic research, and applying the results in innovative ways. That was the clear message from the 11th International Congress on Catalysis which took place last month. Held every four years coincident with the Olympic Games, the congress this year drew about 1,200 delegates to Baltimore from around the world. A wide spectrum of catalysis-related topics surfaced, including novel porous solids, the introduction of metallocene catalysts for polyolefin production, potential applications of photocatalysis, and molecular design of catalysts.
