Anion-templated syntheses of octanuclear silver clusters from a silver dithiophosphate chaint

Extended chain polymers [Ag_5{S_2P(OEt)_2}_4(PF_6)]_n, (1) could be converted to clusters of the type, [Ag_8(X){S_2P(OEt)_2}_6](PF_6) [X = F (2); Cl (3); H (4)], by the addition of appropriate anions, of which [Ag_8(H){S_2P(OEt)_2}_6l~+ showed a unique tetracapped-tetrahedral Ag_8 core and contained Ag-μ-H-Ag linkages.
