A new approach for simple and rapid colorimetric detection of Hg2+ in aqueous solution is proposed based on Hg2+-induced aggregation of mononucleotides-stabilized gold nanoparticles. Mercury(n) (Hg2+) is one of the most potently toxic metals and contributes to various forms of contamination due to its wide distribution.1'2 In the past decades, various advanced techniques based on electrochemical and optical sensors, organic chromophores or fluorophores, conjugated polymers, oligonucleotides, DNAase and proteins, as well as inorganic nanostructures, have been developed for sensitive and selective detections of Hg2+ ions.3-6 Among these approaches, DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticle(AuNP)-based colori-
